Can you guess how many brand new units we’ve opened thanks to Cashback for Communities? Not one, but two!
We celebrated by checking in with some of our amazing volunteers who helped get these units up and running so more girls could join in the fun and adventure of guiding.
First up is Shaunagh, a leader in training with the 303rd A City of Glasgow Guides which only opened its doors in February. Here she shares why she loves being a volunteer.
“It’s highly rewarding being able to make a positive impact on the lives of lots different girls.
Ever since opening the new unit has gone from strength to strength and we recently took some of the girls away on their first camping adventure.”
Jo is a leader in training with the Govanhill Rangers who meet at a social enterprise café which aims to support and empower migrant and refugee women living in Glasgow. Here she shares how the new unit is getting on since opening its doors in April.
“It was great to be a part of setting up the new Govanhill Rangerunit. This opportunity has opened up new experiences to me like developing my leadership skills through getting to know what the girls are interested in order to offer them opportunities they’ll enjoy.
We’ve taken advantage of having a park on our doorstep and gone on some amazing outdoors adventures already. The girls have learned some great new skills like pitching tents and I’m excited to see what the rest of the year has got in store.”
Chloe, a unit helper with the Govanhill Rangers shares why she signed up as a brand new volunteer.
“Although I wasn’t a member growing up I’ve always liked the team-building, learning, laughing and all the marshmallow toasting that comes with being a part of Girlguiding Scotland. This is why I signed up to become a volunteer.
I love the feeling of being in a group and getting to experience new things with the girls. I think they get a lot out of our meetings, like growing in confidence by making new friends which makes me wish I’d been involved when I was younger.”
Thanks to their hard work and determination, our volunteers have been able to reach more girls in new communities who didn’t have the chance to join in the fun of Girlguiding Scotland before. Here’s to them and to many more years of Girlguiding fun and adventures.
