Guide Safari Sleepover FAQs

Date of event: Saturday 13th –Sunday 14th May 2017

Event location:  Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, Stirling, FK9 4UR

Who is the event for?
This event is for Girlguiding Glasgow Guides and their Leaders.

How many adults can we book places for?
You may book for as many adults as needed to satisfy Girlguiding Policy on adult: child ratios. For more information visit: https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/making-guiding-happen/running- your-unit/safeguarding-and-risk/adult-to-child-ratios/

All adults attending the event must have gone through Girlguiding’s recruitment checks and have a corresponding role on Go!

As per Girlguiding policy all youth members must be on Go! to attend this event.

Girlguiding Permission slips
Unit leaders must have completed Girlguiding permission slips for residential (General Health Form) and one day activity and be in possession of them on the day. Template forms which can be adapted for your unit requirements will be provided.

Notifying Commissioners
Following Girlguiding’s protocol please ensure you advise your Commissioner that you are attending this event and have established a home contact.

Event Risk Assessment
Unit leaders are responsible for conducting their own risk assessments for travel to and from the park. Once a unit is booked and paid, the event risk assessment will be forwarded on via email to the main contact along with further event information.

Going Away With Licence
Leaders do not require to hold a Going Away With Licence to attend this event. The central camp team will cover this requirement.

What are the timings of the event?
You are welcome to arrive any time by 10:30 to register. Buses will be directed to the camping zone where Guides will set up tents and leave all bags. Guides should then board their bus they arrived in to undertake the safari reserve trip. Once the safari trip is complete buses are requested to depart until pick up time on Sunday morning. The event is due to finish at 10:30am on Sunday 14th May. Buses can depart from this time.

What should I do when my unit arrives?
Look out for the Girlguiding Events team onsite and ensure you register that your unit has arrived and await further direction to camping zone.

Activities
A visit to the park combines a mixture of things, such as driving through animal reserves, walking through Pets’ Farm, playing in one of the many adventure areas, taking in the Sea Lion presentations and Falconry displays, catching the boat around Chimp Island, and visiting Lemur Land.

Sea lion show times:12pm, 1:30pm, 3pm, 4:30pm
Bird of Prey show times:11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4:30pm
Want to learn a bit more about the animals? Don’t miss the Meet the Keeper talks at enclosures and viewing platforms: 12pm Elephants, 12:30pm Giraffes, 2pm Tigers, 2:30pm Rhinos, 3:30pm Penguins, 4pm Meerkats.

Please confirm times when you arrive on site to avoid disappointment.

The following items are not included within the day ticket:

  •   Carousel
  •   Dodgems
  •   Dragon ride
  •   Cups and saucers
  •   Bouncy castle
  •   Mini tractors
  •   Mini diggers

Guides may wish to bring pocket money for these activities.

What do we wear for the event?
This is a uniformed event for Guides and Leaders on Saturday. Please monitor weather forecast and ensure your unit dresses appropriately for the weather both during the day and at night.

Is food provided at the event?
Guides and leaders are required to bring their own packed lunch and snack for Saturday during the day. There various picnic sites around the site to have your packed lunch at. There is also a restaurant with 2 snack bars selling sandwiches, tea/coffee, soft drinks, ice-cream etc.

Evening meal will be served from the café on site at 5:00pm for all Girlguiding Glasgow members this will include: Beef burgers/hotdogs/chicken burgers/veggie burgers all with chips and a soft drink.

Breakfast will be served at 8am in the café:
Breakfast is a choice of cereal/hot roll and a fruit juice, tea and coffee
Outwit this unit leader are welcome to bring items for unit members for snacks and supper as required.

All dietary requirements can be catered for providing details are received to the events team at time of booking.

What camping kit will my unit require?
Your unit will need to provide their own tents and sleeping bags for the event. Should your unit not own their own tents please speak with your Division Commissioner who will most likely be able to assist.

What personal kit will be required?
Those attending will need warm overnight clothing, sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, toiletries, change of clothing and torch. A kit list will be emailed to leader once registered.

What activities will be available at night?
We plan to host a wide game in the evening along with a campfire. Guide leaders are asked to bring along items for Guides to make amores.

What happens if it rains?
Unfortunately this is an outdoor event there is no solid shelter available should the weather be unfavourable therefore those attending the event to pack for all eventualities.

Is there a gift shop/ will girls need pocket money?
There are gift shops on site; it is at your discretion if you choose to attend with your group. If you choose to we recommend that you instruct parents to send their daughters with a sensible amount of money in a named purse.

Is there somewhere to leave our bags during our day in the park?
When unit arrive on site he will be required to set up camp overnight bags can be placed in their tents. The central camp team will be on a rota system to ensure a member of the team is present to manage the site. All valuable items should remain with the Guides and leaders at all times.

Can you meet additional needs?
We do our best to meet all additional needs that our members may have. Contact Girlguiding Glasgow’s Events Team with any queries you have prior to booking.

Do we need to bring a first aid kit?
We will have a large First Aid kit onsite and a named first aider however we recommend you bring a small first aid kit with your unit and a leader within your group has a valid certificate.

Who should we contact if we need to change our booking?
Please contact the Girlguiding Events team or Girlguiding Glasgow Headquarters Tuesday – Thursday between 10-3pm.

Can I receive a refund if I cancel my booking?
No

Will there be photography at the event?
We will have our own photographers. As this is a large scale event,photo permissions recorded on Go! will not apply. This means that photos and videos may be taken and used immediately for event publicity purposes. This is explained to parents on the Information and Consent for Events/Activities form, and parents are instructed that if they do not wish for this to happen, they must talk to their daughter’s Leader. It is then the duty of the Leader to contact the event organisers, Girlguiding Glasgow.
